100k Classic Race Report

September 9, 2009

After a beautiful night of cuddling and spooning together we all arose at 5:45 for the race. We threw down some coffee and cliff bars and pedaled to the start in the dark, where we lined up with about 130 other racers. As in years past, the race consisted of lots of early attacks and splits, but eventually they all came back. Nothing ever really got more than a minute or two up the road. We had our hand in most of the big splits and we even threw down a couple counters ourselves, but to no avail.

As everyone knows this is one of those races that is super easy to sit in, but as soon as you hit the wind, and try to take on the rollers by yourself, your legs get really pissed off at you. So with about 3 laps to go, and a field sprint imminent, we started to relax and talked about the lead-out. The plan was for everybody to find me with about 1 to go. I would get us into position for the last corner. Thumper and Joe would then take over and get us to the big chicken, then I would take Rob over the crest of the hill. Sure enough, with about 1/2 lap to go, I looked back to see everyone on my wheel, as planned.

As we came up the feed zone hill before the last corner we started to get boxed in a little, as it was way too slow. Luckily Rob sensed the swarm and followed the wave of riders that went left. Just after he did that, two masters guys (on the same team i think) went down in front of me and joe. So I nailed them and Joe nailed me. Rob narrowly missed slicing the dude’s head with his chainring and cleared him to the left. Going into the last corner, Parker was bumped and cut off so he had to jump the curb, which put him out of contention. Rob, however, managed to stay up front and threw down a nasty sprint for 11th.

Good race by everybody, just unlucky towards the end………thats racing I guess. Bummer though, I think we would have showed everybody what to expect next year, though. Oh well, next year.

River Gorge Race Report

Locos had a good weekend in Chattanooga. The road race on saturday
went through three states and over two major climbs. Casey got into a
small group from the gun and got up the road a couple of minutes. The
rest of the field stayed together untill it reached Sand mountain
where it then shattered. Joe got into a small group that caught up to
Casey’s group just as the descent was starting. After the descent
Parker and a few others managed to bridge up to the front group with
Casey and Joe. Casey kept some attacks going to try to force the
climbers to chase. The race stayed lively with lots of attacks over
the stair stepping climbs leading to Racoon mountain. Joe got to the
base of the mountain with around 12 riders and ended up 6th to the
top.
The TT was superfast but we weren’t able to round out the top 10 for
omnium points.
The Crit Sunday was fast. We knew myogenesis was going to have to keep
the race together or represent themselves in a break, so we knew we
couldn’t let a break go that had them in it. Parker did a great job
making sure that didn’t happen. On the last lap we all got split up
trying to hold posistion on the front. Casey was still able to get 4th
and Joe got 6th. Joe ended up 5th in the omnium.
It was a fun weekend and we made some paper baby!
